A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday as EQUS, Canada’s largest member-owned utility, prepares to build an ambitious new head office in Innisfail.

The building will feature 19,000 square feet of working space on a 2.5 acre site adjacent to Highway 2 and building will incorporate elements of the company’s past, present and future in an open-concept interior design.

Camdon Construction was selected as the contractor through a competitive RFP process earlier this year. Construction is expected to be completed in the spring of 2020.

EQUS says the building is designed to be energy efficient and capable of supporting future micro-generation. It will be more than double the size of their current Innisfail facility built in 1986, which will continue to house the rest of the EQUS’s Central Area operational staff.

Following a merger of two existing companies in 2013, EQUS has grown from 70 employees to over 110 in 2019, 70 of whom work in the current facilities in Innisfail. About half of those employees are move into the new building, which will be the first Corporate Office for EQUS.

EQUS provides services to 12,000 homes, businesses and farms in 26 municipal districts and counties.

EQUS also has offices in Claresholm, Medicine Hat and Onoway.
