Lyme Society invites public to education session on Sunday at museum

May 18, 2019 | 2:03 PM

The Central Alberta Lyme Society is hosting an informative education session on Sunday at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery.

Members of the public are invited to attend from 2-4 p.m., by donation.

Echo Armstrong, CALS co-founder, says they’re trying to save people from having to live with the often debilitating disease.

“We don’t want to scare people so they don’t go outside. Being outside is good for you, but how can you do it safely?” Armstrong says.

“We’ll be talking about Lyme disease basics, and about if you think you have it, what you could do. The earlier someone gets treatment, the better the prognosis.”

Lyme disease is caused by being bitten by a tick, which can be found in tall grass and wooded areas. Ticks are also dangerous to household pets like cats and dogs.

In the last year, CALS has sold more than 500 tick removal kits.

Additionally, City of Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer recently once again proclaimed May as Lyme Awareness Month, which is also recognized globally.
