Lifejacket Loaner Stations opening for the season

May 16, 2019 | 3:08 PM

The Lifesaving Society Alberta and Northwest Territories Branch is pleased to announce that 39 Lifejacket Loaner Stations will be opening in Alberta and the Northwest Territories this season.

In fact, many Lifejacket Loaner Stations are set to open this May long weekend.

Lifejacket Loaner Stations provide lifejackets for the public to borrow, at no cost, and then return after use.

Each station is also supplied with Water Smart public education materials and posters to raise awareness about preventing drowning and water-related injury.

Lifejacket Loaner Stations are currently located in many provincial and territorial parks, as well as in several municipalities and private communities.

The Lifesaving Society acknowledges six new sites in Alberta to open this year, including Athabasca Regional Multiplex, Cochrane Public Library, Wabasca Water World and Fitness Centre, Town of Beaverlodge, Town of Coronation and Town of Grande Cache.

Additional new sites in Alberta include Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park (2 stations), Beaver Lake Provincial Recreation Area, and Pinehurst Lake Campground (Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area).

Further to that, officials say three new stations will be opening in the Northwest Territories, including Ndilo, Dettah and the Town of Fort Smith.

Officials with the Lifesaving Society says drowning statistics across Canada continue to demonstrate that not wearing a lifejacket is a key risk factor associated with drowning.

In 84 per cent of boating-related fatalities, those who drowned were not wearing a lifejacket or PFD at the time of the incident.

The Lifesaving Society advocates for the use of lifejackets and active caregiver supervision when in, on and around water.
