Central Alberta school trustees are said to be welcoming the opportunity to work with Alberta’s newest education minister.

Former ASBA Zone 4 colleague Adriana LaGrange was elected Red Deer-North UCP MLA on April 16 and later sworn in as education minister April 30.

Zone 4 officials say they are anticipating positive leadership from LaGrange, a former trustee and board chair with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools.

“Congratulations go from our entire Zone 4 trustee group to Adriana,” says Connie Huelsman, ASBA Zone 4 chair, in a press release. “We believe her experience in education and specifically as a school board trustee puts her in an ideal position to positively impact education throughout Alberta. We are looking forward to working with her in her role as education minister.”

Zone 4 officials say trustees met recently to discuss a number of advocacy priorities to address with the new government.

Highlights include challenges with the current funding formula and insufficient funding to support inclusive education.

Transportation funding, mandatory entry-level training regulations for school bus drivers and the importance of consultation with stakeholders, communities and all Albertans were also identified.

“To the new government, we would strongly request the opportunity to work together on issues that impact education,” adds Huelsman. “School boards have an important and unique voice. We know our communities, we know the needs of our students and schools and we are well equipped to provide solid insights and positive solutions.”
