Possible taunting led to elk being killed near Canmore

CANMORE – RCMP say they believe some young people may have harassed a herd of elk just before a number of the animals were killed by a semi last month near Canmore.

The collision happened April 27 on the Trans-Canada Highway, not far from a pedestrian underpass, but there’s no word of charges being laid.

Police say information they’ve received shows the elk had been yelled at and chased, and the animals responded by running onto the highway.

Investigators believe the intention was not to force the elk onto the road, but they consider the deaths an example of an unintended consequence that can occur when people choose to harass wildlife.
