Rocky Mountain House town council is renaming 54 Street as Sutherland Drive in honour of Fred and Margaret Sutherland.

To commemorate the special couple and mark the significance of the Sutherland name, in a recent town council meeting, members agreed to add a recognition tree with a memorial plaque at the base.

“Council passed a resolution in February to rename 54 Street in honour of Fred and Margaret Sutherland,” says Laura Button, Town Communications Coordinator.

“Long-time upstanding community member Mr. Sutherland was one of the dam busters during the Second World War.”

Mr. Sutherland passed away in January of this year, which is when Mayor Tammy Burke made a motion for council to consider the renaming.

“Everyone who knew them knew they were a pair, childhood sweethearts and married for over 70 years,” Button states.

The Town is planning a public unveiling ceremony where the Sutherland family will be present.

The tree will be located at the northeast corner of 54 Street and 52 Avenue.
