The Red Deer Hospice Society realized more than $120,000 towards its $5.2 million expansion over the weekend.

On Saturday, the society hosted its annual Run/Hike for Hospice at Kerry Wood Nature Centre.

The run/hike raised just over $40,000, while its No Show Gala raffle raised close to $90,000. More than 300 people participated and there were approximately 50 volunteers.

“We know we have an aging population and we know that it’s a challenge when families have to support their loved ones at end of life,” says Evelyn Storm, executive director.

“Hospice in a good position to assist with the transition, to support the physical care with 24/7 nursing care, the emotional care of families through our bereavement coordinators, and we offer a holistic and complete set of resources and services.”

Storm says there are very few hospices like theirs in Alberta.

“The level of support that we have from the community is extraordinary,” she adds.

The expansion, which got started last summer, involves going from 10 to 16 rooms, plus additional renovations to the existing facility.

“The difference that makes is supporting 100 more central Albertans,100 more residents and their families in receiving compassionate end of life care,” Storm says.
