Tax Payments

Taxes might not be payable by credit card

May 3, 2019 | 4:36 PM

Rocky Mountain House town council are considering banning property owners from paying their municipal taxes with a credit card.

Some people pay with credit card because they have no other choice, but some use the option to benefit from certain credit card companies loyalty programs.

For example, paying a property tax of $4,000 with a one per cent cash back on your card and simply paying it off right away, could net you $40 with no increase in effort.

If all property owners were to pay by credit card, Rocky Mountain House would be on the hook for nearly a quarter of a million dollars in Visa and MasterCard fees.

Although the exact number of accounts who have paid in that manner is unknown, the Town can say that it paid $59,222 in credit card fees for 2018.

To date, council has asked administration to research best practices and agreements among municipalities regarding credit card payments – in particular for tax payments.
