Red Deer Public Schools hosts “Kindergarten Here I Come”

Apr 30, 2019 | 7:00 PM

Local families with children entering Kindergarten this fall had a chance for a sneak peek on Tuesday of what to expect in September.

Kindergarten Here I Come, hosted by Red Deer Public Schools, was held at the Parkland Mall with parents having the opportunity to register their child for classes and the kids getting engaged with hands-on learning activities.

Susan Parkinson, Student Services / Learning Services Early Learning Coordinator for Red Deer Public Schools, says like Kindergarten, the event is a great way to transition from a child’s home life to school life.

“By having them introduce themselves to some of the activities and teachers and administrators that are here today, it helps expose them to something that they might be able to anticipate in the fall,” says Parkinson. “We want them to feel as comfortable as they can on their very first day of school as a new Kindergarten student.”

Hans Huizing, Principal at Normandeau School, adds Kindergarten can be a time when children are introduced to a very different culture than what they might have at home.

“It’s an excellent introduction to what learning is all about,” he explains. “Not just for that year but for the rest of their lives. Kindergarten is a time where you get to experiment and play and meet new friends and do all these things that you have not had an opportunity to do before if you are just at home.”

Red Deer Public School officials confirm registration is now open for the 2019-2020 school year.

Registration forms are available online at www.rdpsd.ab.ca.
