Red Deer property tax rates set for 2019

Apr 30, 2019 | 9:35 AM

Red Deer city council has approved the 2019 Tax Bylaw that includes a 1.89% increase for residential and non-residential property types, and a 4.09% increase for multifamily property types.

The tax rate increase is lower than the 2.15% that was forecast following approval of the 2019 Operating Budget in January.

The tax rates are set each year to fund the municipal tax requirement, the Alberta Education requisition, and the Piper Creek Foundation (now operating as Bridges Community Living).

“City Council finalizes property tax rates every spring to ensure the municipal and requisition funding requirements are met,” said Joanne Parkin, Revenue and Assessment Services Manager. “The largest requisition is collected on behalf of the province to fund education. This year, The City will collect $46.3 million in property taxes on behalf of the Government of Alberta to fund the school system. This comprises 28% of the average residential tax bill.”

The approved $136.4 million municipal property tax requirement will fund the programs and services provided to Red Deer residents every day.

The tax increase means a typical house assessed at $325,000 will pay $4.87 per month more in total property tax ($58.44 for the year).

Property tax notices will be mailed on May 21. Taxes are due on Friday, June 28. Penalties will be applied to outstanding balances on July 1 (those enrolled in the Tax Installment Plan are exempt). Property tax payments can be made at City Hall, online, at your financial institution, by mail, or through our Tax Instalment Plan.
