LaGrange, Dreeshen, Nixon named provincial ministers

Three central Alberta MLAs have been named to Premier Jason Kenney’s new provincial cabinet.

Red Deer-North MLA Adriana LaGrange is the new Minister of Education.

LaGrange served as a Trustee with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools from 2007 until resigning to run in the provincial election. She is also the former president of the Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association and former vice-president of the Canadian Catholic School Trustees’ Association.

LaGrange is beginning her first term as MLA for Red Deer-North.

Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA Devin Dreeshen is Alberta’s new Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.

The Pine Lake area farmer was a director of the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association and board member on the Crossroads Agricultural Society. He worked as an advisor for former federal agriculture minister Gerry Ritz from 2008-2015.

Dreeshen was first elected as MLA last year.

Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre MLA Jason Nixon was named Minister of Environment and Parks.

Elected as MLA in 2015, Nixon served as Official Opposition House Leader, Chief Opposition Whip and held several Shadow Minister roles for the Wildrose and UCP parties. He was also part of several legislative standing committees.

“Serving as the Minister of Environment and Parks as well as Government House Leader is a tremendous honour. I am incredibly grateful to Premier Kenney for the opportunity to serve Albertans under his leadership,” Nixon said in a statement.

“I commit to always putting Albertans first in the decision-making process. Alberta has a proud history of environmental stewardship, and the United Conservative Caucus recognizes that conservation, economic activity, and recreation are all important functions that can and should support each other.”

The swearing-in ceremony for Kenney and his new cabinet was held Tuesday morning in Edmonton.
