Annual tea party event to benefit education in Somalia

An event in Red Deer this May will once again benefit the Education for Somali Girls & Boys Fund.

The fourth annual Mother’s Day Tea Party is happening May 11 from 1-3 p.m. at the Pioneer Lodge (4324 46A Avenue). Tickets are $10 with funds going to help educate orphaned children in the east African nation of Somalia.

Founder and president of the charity, Zainab Mohamoud, explains why the cause is close to her heart.

“When I finished elementary school (in Somalia), I didn’t have the opportunity to go to high school,” she says. “Then I came to Canada and now I want to give that opportunity to Somalian kids who don’t have the opportunity Canadian kids have.”

In 2014, Mohamoud returned to her home country to oversee the construction of a school which now enrolls 200 students, a project done in conjunction with A Better World Canada.

The goal now is to raise $100,000 for a 200-child shelter. About 22 per cent of that has been raised so far.

The Mother’s Day event will include an Ethiopian coffee ceremony, henna, silent auction and face painting for kids, as well as the launch of a new magazine called ‘To Somali Girls and Boys with Love.’
