STAVANGER, Norway — Former Red Deerian Jocelyn Peterman and partner Brett Gallant lost in the final of the 2019 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship on Saturday.

The pair was defeated by Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg and Oskar Eriksson 6-5 in the final.

Canada began the match with the hammer, scoring a point. Sweden gained single points in the following three ends to take a 3-1 lead.

Canada scored two in the fifth to equalize, and then the teams exchanged deuces in the sixth and seventh.

Sweden with the hammer in the final end, Peterman and Gallant attempted to steal, but Hasselborg found a path to the button.

“They played really well,” Gallant said of Olympic gold-medallist Hasselborg and three-time world men’s champion Eriksson. “I myself couldn’t quite get the line on a few of my shots and gave them some openings.”

Peterman added, “We had a lot of fun, we were happy with how we played. It’s obviously not the finish we were hoping for, but we had a good week.”

The silver medal result for Canada is among the best Canadian performances ever at the tournament after Joanne Courtney and Reid Carruthers earned silver in 2017.

Earlier in the day Saturday, Gallant and Peterman defeated Team USA’s John Shuster and Cory Christensen 9-5 to reach the final.
