BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

Registration still open for BIG Pursuit this weekend

The third annual BIG Pursuit in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Red Deer is happening this weekend.

Co-sponsored by BIG 105.5, Servus Credit Union and Youth HQ, the event will see 30+ teams compete Amazing Race-style around Red Deer in a bid to raise around $50,000.

“This is the primary major fundraising event in support of the BBBS program in Red Deer,” says John Johnston, Community Engagement Manager with BBBS. “Funds raised help support our volunteer recruitment, screening, and matching with children, our in-school mentoring program, and our community-based rural programming. It’s all about matching and supporting caring adults with children who need a role model in their life.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Red Deer currently has 73 children on a waiting list, 61 of whom are boys.

“In terms of volunteer recruitment, getting male volunteers is a little more difficult,” he explains. “We make all kinds of efforts to do that, but it’s a committment that a volunteer has to make. Hopefully this spurs someone thinking about it to inquire more.”

Johnston says the average weekly committment can be between one to four hours.
