Day of Mourning ceremony in Red Deer

Apr 25, 2019 | 3:12 PM

The Parkland Regional Safety Committee along with the Canadian Society of Safety Engineers, Manufactures Health and Safety Association and the Red Deer Construction Association, are organizing and holding a number of events in the Red Deer area to recognize safety in our community.

Events planned include the National Day of Mourning Ceremony at Red Deer City Hall Park from 11:00 – 11:30 a.m. on Monday Apr. 29.

The event is an annual ceremony that takes a moment to reflect on workers and their families that have been impacted by workplace tragedies, with an Honour Guard, Proclamation, short story from a person whose spouse died in a workplace accident and a moment of silence.

Every year, workers, families, employers, safety associations and others come together at ceremonies held around the province to remember those who were injured, disabled or have lost their lives to work-related incidents or occupational diseases.

In 1984, The Canadian Labour Congress first declared April 28 Canada’s Day of Mourning.

Other events include Steps for Life Walk at Red Deer Bower Ponds on the Main Stage from 11:00 – 11:30 a.m. on May 4.

This is an annual fund raiser for the Threads of Life Organization that provides supports and resources for families impacted by workplace tragedies.

Finally, an Elementary School Mock Incident will take place at St. Marguerite Burgeoys Catholic School in Innisfail from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on May 6.

This is an event put on that has a student “injured” in a mock incident, and while their classmates look on, ambulance, police and others arrive to “tend to the injured”.

Joe Whitbread will emcee the event and be followed up with a Personal Protective Fashion show with PPE their parents may wear, and PPE they should wear when involved in different events.

Statistics indicate 162 workplace fatalities in Alberta last year, with Canada averaging 897 workplace deaths per year.
