Crews responds to fuel storage complaint at downtown residence

Apr 24, 2019 | 3:12 PM

Crews are cleaning up a property in downtown Red Deer after RCMP, EMS and the HAZMAT team responded to a fuel storage complaint on Wednesday.

Just before noon, Red Deer Emergency Services and bylaw inspectors were conducting a house inspection after neighbours reported a strong smell of diesel and fuel. Upon arrival, Red Deer Emergency Services called for assistance from the RCMP.

As a safety precaution, RCMP cleared the residence while bylaw inspectors and Red Deer Emergency Services conducted their inspection.

Officials say numerous 220 litre barrels, slip tanks and jerry cans were found in the backyard of the home on Ross Street, in addition to what was deemed as ‘unsafe’ electrical components stored nearby.

Red Deer Emergency Services remains on scene to work with the property owner to ensure appropriate clean up of the property and disposal of the material.

During their response, police removed two firearms from the home as a precaution.

“This serves as an important reminder that if you see something suspicious, report it,” says Cpl. Karyn Kay with Red Deer RCMP.
