RDC turfs golf program

Golfers at Red Deer College have turned in their final scorecard.

After careful evaluation and deliberation, RDC has decided to suspend the golf program indefinitely.

Officials say tight budgetary constraints have made the continued operation of the golf team difficult and unfeasible in light of several factors.

Factors outlined in a media release include the length of the golf season, and the declining scope and depth of competition in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

The size of the program when compared to other RDC Athletics programs, and overall contribution to the mandate of RDC Athletics to build community were also cited.

“It was truly a difficult decision that came to the forefront after many internal discussions,” says Dr. Paulette Hanna, Vice President Academic. “At RDC, we are proud of all of our student-athletes and coaches, and the legacy they’ve achieved.”

“These kinds of decisions are always challenging as they are emotionally charged, especially for those invested in Red Deer College Golf and RDC Athletics,” adds Diane St-Denis, RDC Athletic Director. “We would like to thank the coaches and student-athletes for their hard work and dedication to the program. Supports have been offered to our student-athletes during this time of change and transition, and we wish them well in the future.”

RDC’s golf program has seen much success over the years, including a national title for the Queens last season, their first in CCAA history.

Meanwhile, Queens golfer Shaye Leidenius also fought her way to individual silver during the 2017-2018 season.

The RDC Kings also qualified for nationals last year but finished ninth out of 11 teams competing.

Darin Bertschi (+19) had the best finish for the Kings at 37th overall.

More to come.
