High school and elementary students in Alberta have elected a majority United Conservative government in the mock Student Vote program run by CIVIX.

More than 165,000 students at 1,229 participated in the Student Vote this year.

Kenney and the UCP were granted 49 out of 87 seats by students and 36.1 per cent of the vote. Kenney also won his constituency of Calgary-Lougheed with 54.4 per cent of the vote.

Meanwhile, Rachel Notley and the NDP took 35 seats and 30.3 per cent of the popular vote. The party leader also won her electoral division of Edmonton-Strathcona with 52.1 per cent of the ballots.

In Red Deer, both Jason Stephan and Adriana LaGrange won seats representing the UCP.

“CIVIX would like to thank all participating educators, and their students, for their enthusiasm and dedication to this exercise,” said Taylor Gunn, President of CIVIX. “We are sincerely grateful to Elections Alberta, The Alberta Teachers’ Association, the Edmonton Community Foundation, the Calgary Foundation, Alberta Education and the Government of Canada for making this project possible.”

In addition, the Alberta Party’s Stephan Mandel was defeated in his riding, but the party took three seats.

The Alberta Liberals did not win any seats and received just 5.3 per cent of votes cast.

Students cast approximately 4400 rejected ballots and 1900 declined ballots.

This is the fourth provincial-level Student Vote project conducted in Alberta. In the 2015 provincial election, 92,000 Alberta students participated from 800 schools.
