Court Briefs: April 17

Apr 17, 2019 | 8:00 AM

A man charged after Red Deer RCMP thwarted an abduction attempt earlier this year will face a preliminary hearing.

Brian Stephens, 39, faces 19 charges relating to stolen property and firearms. He will be in Red Deer provincial court on May 24 for a hearing to determine whether enough evidence is present for his case to go to trial.

On February 7 at approximately 7:50 p.m., City Mounties received a call from a woman in Edmonton indicating she was concerned that one of her relatives had possibly been abducted in Red Deer.

An investigation by police led them to a residence in the Highland Green neighbourhood where officers intercepted a stolen vehicle and performed what was described as a “high-risk take down.”

Both the victim and suspect were unharmed in the incident.

A Red Deer man charged after an RCMP vehicle was rammed into and an officer dragged in Penhold late last year will be sentenced this summer.

The incident happened around 11:00 p.m. on December 16 when Mounties on patrol noted a vehicle idling outside the Penholder Tavern. Police ran a check and noted the license plate on it was registered to a different vehicle.

The male driver and lone occupant of the vehicle became agitated when approached by officers, yelling at them before backing his vehicle into the front of the fully-marked police vehicle parked behind him.

When police tried to make an arrest, the driver fled resulting in an officer being dragged approximately 15 feet, sustaining minor injuries.

RCMP later located the vehicle in Red Deer and the male was arrested without further incident.

Chasetin Morin, 24, pleaded guilty in Red Deer provincial court last week to obstructing a peace officer, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and breach of recognizance.

A pre-sentence report is scheduled for June 24.

A local couple caught red-handed stealing a bait car last year will go to trial this fall.

Spencer Black, 21, and Shyla Loustel, 23, were charged last March with a long list of counts including trespassing at night, possession of stolen property over $5,000, mischief, break and enter, and possession of a controlled substance (meth). The pair has been scheduled for trial on Oct. 9, 2019 in Ponoka.

Ponoka RCMP say they started an investigation after a bait car they planted at a local business on the morning of March 11 was stolen.

With assistance from Red Deer RCMP Police Dog Services, Ponoka Mounties were able to track and intercept the bait car near Joffre and arrest a male and female suspect inside it.

Further investigation revealed the pair stole the bait car and drove it to a rural property near Gull Lake where they committed numerous break and enters and thefts.

A day earlier, on March 10, police say the same male and female were involved when a truck stolen from Rocky Mountain House was in a collision on Highway 53 near Range Road 235. The truck rolled in the ditch and a male and female suspect fled the scene. A short time later police say the pair attended two separate farm properties and attempted to break in to numerous buildings and steal a vehicle until they were confronted by the property owners.

A Red Deer man charged after central Alberta Mounties recovered stolen vehicles and property in Drumheller earlier this year will stand trial.

Drumheller RCMP arrested three people possessing two stolen vehicles on February 11. Further investigation led to the recovery of stolen identity documents, stolen ski equipment, and an iPhone.

Isaiah Nobel, 20, faces several stolen property-related counts as well as breach of recognizance. His trial in Drumheller provincial court is scheduled for July 26.

Shae-Lee Phillips, 21, of Red Deer was handed a suspended sentence in relation to this file on April 12.

Kenton Wood, 25, missed a scheduled court appearance last week. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Meantime, Nobel is slated for trial in Red Deer this fall following another arrest that same week.

It was on the afternoon of February 15 when a Mountie on patrol in Innisfail responded to a bank robbery and came across two men in a stolen truck.

An ensuing chase eventually led to 32 Street in Red Deer where police used a spike belt to stop the truck. The occupants fled before being tracked down by police dogs nearby and arrested.

Nobel and Peter Walker, 33, of Red Deer are due for trial on September 30.
