Red Deer Transit reducing Sunday and holiday bus service

Apr 16, 2019 | 12:10 PM

Local transit riders will soon see reduced bus service on Sundays and holidays.

Starting May 5, City officials say Red Deer Transit will reduce bus service from every half hour to every hour on Sundays and holidays.

The changes were approved by council as a cost savings measure during 2019 Operating Budget deliberations in January.

On Sundays and holidays, officials say the first bus will depart Sorensen Station at 8:45 a.m., with service every hour until the last bus departs at 6:45 p.m.

“When we look at our ridership numbers, Sundays and holidays are our lowest usage days,” says George Penny, Transit Manager, in a press release. “This change balances the need for maintaining transit on low ridership days, with the demand for this service.”

Through the Automated Fare Box System and System Wide Intelligent Transit system, officials say Red Deer Transit was able to use ridership statistics to best determine how a service reduction would impact as few people as possible.
