Lowered Blackfalds speed limit starts in June

Apr 12, 2019 | 3:01 PM

The recently-approved speed limit reduction in Blackfalds will come into effect in June.

Town Council approved a new Traffic Bylaw on March 26 that includes lowering the speed limit on town streets from 50 km/h to 40 km/h, effective June 15, 2019.

There are a few exceptions to the reduction:

– Vista Trail, South Street, Broadway Avenue (north of Womacks Road) and Cottonwood Drive where the posted speed limit will remain at 50 kilometers per hour,

– School and Playground Zones will remain at 30 kilometers per hour and be in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 1 hour after sunset,

– Highway 2A, where speed limits fall under Provincial jurisdiction, will remain as posted.

Town officials say they will be conducting public education and notification activities leading up to June 15 change. After that there will be a compliance program to extend education and awareness for the bylaw before any tickets are issued.

In addition to lowering the speed limit, the new Traffic Bylaw in Blackfalds also aligns school and playground times in town limits to be in effect from 7:30 a.m. to one hour after sunset.
