Red Deer Catholic dual credit program receives $50,000 grant

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools has been awarded $50,000 grant from the Government of Alberta for a new dual-credit program for high school students.

For the 2020-2021 school year, the division will launch a Natural Resources and Environmental Studies dual credit program with the partnership of a post-secondary institute in Alberta.

“We chose to begin dual credit development opportunities in Natural and Environmental Studies because we feel this will benefit many of our students. It is predictably one of the fastest growing areas in our marketplace,” said Dual Credit Lead Teacher, Tracey Millar.

Dual credit programs allow Grade 10-12 students to take a post-secondary course or a series of courses and earn both high school credits, as well as college/university credentials.

This type of programming goes beyond Career Technology Services (CTS) that already exists in high school.

“Dual credit programming at Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools allows students to experience authentic post-secondary learning during a student’s high school academic career,” said Associate Superintendent of Inclusive Learning, Dr. Dave Khatib at Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools.

“It gives students an advancement in their future area of studies or work, which in turn makes high school more rewarding. Students who have taken advantage of dual credit opportunities have found immediate success as they leave high school and enter into either the workforce or to further their studies at a post-secondary institution. We are extremely thankful to Alberta Education for this grant and what it can do for students in dual credit programming.”
