Olds College honours top athletes

Olds College has named its top two athletes of the year, and they are both international student-athletes.

Brittney Thibeaux, a native of Lake Villa, Illinois, had a dream season with the Broncos on the basketball court.

Not only did she lead her team to the ACAC and CCAA championship series, she was named CCAA Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Now, her school has named her Female Athlete of the Year.

On the men’s side, Fabian Gromenida of Formosa, Argentina dominated on the soccer pitch.

The speedy forward was named to the ACAC South All-Conference team after scoring 11 goals in 10 games. He then added All-Tournament Team honours at the ACAC Futsal Championships in Lethbridge.

In the freshman category, Felicia Rodney was named the Female Rookie Athlete of the Year, this after winning ACAC honours for Rookie of the Year.

A soccer player from Calgary, Rodney finished second in the ACAC with 14 goals in the soccer season. She was also a consistent threat in futsal.

Meanwhile, volleyball player Thundersky Walkingbear takes home Male Rookie of the Year honours.

Originally from Thunderchild, SK, Walkingbear led the Broncos volleyball team with 228 kills and 22 service aces, while adding 129 digs and 16 stuff blocks.

Men’s volleyball captain Jesse Stoddart and Women’s Hockey player Jesse Jack were named male and female ‘Impact Athletes’ of the year.

Karley Dieken, Katharina Oeltermann, Devin Vriend and Cale Scotton earned Academic Student Athlete of the Year honours for achieving success on the field of play while also maintaining exceptionally high GPAs.
