Nixon ready to fight against Trudeau carbon tax after repealing Alberta’s

Jason Nixon, the incumbent UCP candidate in Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre, is looking forward to serving the constituents there once again.

Nixon, who has served in the provincial legislature since 2015, and originally with the Wildrose Party, says among his top priorities are jobs, the economy, pipelines, and getting rid of the carbon tax.

“Those are the big issues that we hear everywhere in the province including in our constituency. Locally, those issues are obviously important, but some of the big issues we continue to face locally are the unique things that come with being a rural part of our province, so funding around rural education, healthcare needs, and making sure that we are able to represent rural Alberta in Edmonton and make sure that we can continue to thrive.”

Nixon doesn’t believe rural Albertans have had their voices heard enough over the last four years.

As for the carbon tax, Nixon was asked about the thought that getting rid of the carbon tax would just end up sending money that’s currently staying in Alberta, to Ottawa instead. He says that claim is inaccurate.

“We are ready to join the premier of Saskatchewan, among others, to fight the federal carbon tax, but I don’t accept the NDP and the Alberta Party’s argument that they are just going to allow Justin Trudeau to put their carbon tax in our province,” he says. “A UCP government would stand up to Trudeau and the federal Liberals, and we would use our mechanisms in the courts to block a federal carbon tax.”

Nixon also touched on the UCP announced plan to hold a referendum on equalization, and the party’s goal to see that Trudeau is no longer prime minister in six months.

“I’m proud to be from this constituency,” he added. “It’s a place I’ve raised my family and it’s my home even when I leave politics. It’s been a privilege to serve here the last four years.”

In his tenure, Nixon has served as, among other things, opposition house leader and chief opposition whip.
