Man accused in sexual assaults has charges dropped

Mar 29, 2019 | 3:40 PM

Trial did not proceed and charges were dropped on Friday for a Red Deer man accused in a pair of sexual assaults in our city last year.

Daniel Leonard, 41, saw two counts of sexual assault, one of committing an indecent act, failing to comply with a probation order and breach of recognizance charges dismissed by the Crown, due to insufficient evidence in proving the identity of the accused and no reasonable likelihood of conviction.

Leonard’s charges related to two separate incidents in Red Deer on Nov. 28, 2018, including one that RCMP say happened while the victim was walking near City Hall.

It’s alleged in that incident the suspect came up from behind the woman and grabbed her in a private area before continuing on his way.

Leonard still faces sexual assault-related charges in other incidents and is due back in Red Deer court Apr. 23.

In February of 2018, Leonard was sentenced for a 2016 sexual assault in downtown Red Deer.

He was also previously convicted for sexual assaults on two women near the University of Alberta in January 2014 and served more than two years in a U.S. prison for making thousands of harassing phone calls to women while working as a Human Resources manager at a water park in Washington State.

Leonard was deported back to Canada in June 2013.
