St. Francis of Assisi Middle School is promoting cultural awareness by bringing in local Blackfoot Nation artist Ryan Jason Allen Willert.

Over the course of ten days, Willert will be sharing his cultural and traditional teachings with staff and students at the school.

Willert will focus on teaching individuals about the law of elements, buffalo teachings, and smudging.

“With Willert being part of our school community, we feel he will have a huge impact on our school in a positive light,” says Vice-Principal Stefan LaBrecque.

“We feel honoured as part of the division to have Ryan Willert in our school to share his culture and traditional teachings,” says Selena Frizzley with the division’s First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Support Team. “This will support our students and staff to move forward in reconciliation and to gain a better understanding of our First Nations people.

Willert was born and raised in Southern Alberta, he is sought out in the community as an important role model and does a lot of work with youth outreach and inspiration.
