Next step taken in Drayton Valley aquatic facility project

Another step has been taken towards the creation of a new aquatic facility in Drayton Valley.

During its regular meeting last week, council voted to approve a recommendation from Administration to proceed with the request for proposal process, which officials say would result in the selection of an Integrated Project Delivery Team (IPDT) to establish the Aquatic Facility Validation Report.

Drayton Valley Mayor Michael Doerksen says council voted earlier this year to set money aside for the project.

“This decision was essentially to fund the ability to start the integrated project delivery process,” says Deoerksen. “So maybe six months from now we’ll be able to say this is the pool that we can build, this is where it’s going to go, this is how much it’s going to cost and then we vote yes or no on the project between the Town of Drayton Valley and Brazeau County.”

Officials say the Town of Drayton Valley and Brazeau County have each committed $5 million to the construction of a new aquatic facility.

In addition to these funds, an aquatic reserve held by the Town includes $175, 568.85 from an annual pool surcharge, a trust fund of $304,217.62 from Ridgeback Resources and a trust fund of $1,000 from Glen Gunderson Trucking.

Officials say the Joint Aquatic Facility Committee for the Town of Drayton Valley and Brazeau County is tasked with establishing the conceptual design and capital business plan for the proposed facility.

It’s anticipated the request for proposal process will take three to six months and be done in three phases, including selecting an architect, selecting a general contractor and selecting all remaining consultants and trades.
