RCMP investigating snowmobile crash on Gull Lake

Mar 13, 2019 | 12:48 PM

RCMP are asking anyone who uses boats and other pleasure crafts during summer time and mooring or anchoring them, to remove the anchors out of the water for the winter.

On Mar. 11, Blackfalds Mounties received a complaint of a hazard on Gull Lake.

Police say the complainant reported her son was snowmobiling on Gull Lake west of Township Road 412, when the snowmobile hit something hard, throwing the driver off the machine and landing 30 feet away.

RCMP say the machine’s bottom part was wrecked and the track ripped off.

Luckily, the speeds weren’t too high according to police and the driver walked away with no injuries.

RCMP say the driver tracked back and observed a 2 foot long, 3 inch in diameter pipe protruding out of the ice.

However, Mounties point-out the pipe was originally covered with snow and impossible to see.

It’s suspected the pipe is a boat anchor/mooring location.

The part of the pipe that was protruding out of the ice was broken off according to police, adding further removal is necessary once the ice melts to prevent any injury or property damage to additional pleasure craft users.

Mounties conclude the driver of the snowmobile was very lucky to walk away from the incident unharmed, saying the incident could have ended with serious injuries or even death.
