Women’s March pushes for healing and positivity in Red Deer

Mar 9, 2019 | 1:54 PM

The first ever Red Deer Women’s March took place Saturday morning with approximately 100 people — men and women — in attendance.

The march, which was co-organized by Sadia Khan with the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre, began with a smudge, then went from the Club Cafe on Ross Street, down past City Hall, and back to the Club Cafe for a potluck.

Khan says the march, happening a day after International Women’s Day, should be a reminder to celebrate the accomplishments of women and to work to rid the world of inequity every day of the year.

“Women are such an integral part of the community, and women are a healing part of the community. They are peace builders, they are a visible force of positive change, which is needed everywhere,” said Khan. “The hashtag is #WomenHealingCommunities, and this is what we need in the city of Red Deer at this point and really all around the world.”

Asked what Red Deer needs healing from, Khan noted recent divisive protests which have occurred downtown that have targeted minorities, namely immigrants.

As it so happened, another Yellow Vest rally — this one more sparsely attended than previous iterations — was taking place near City Hall while the Women’s March passed by.

Some respect was shown, though one man in a yellow vest, who asked to remain anonymous, was shouting the phrase “global warming” back at participants of the march.

“I’m just mocking them,” he stated. “Equality is pretty generic, but it’s a free country.”

Khan added that the march is to bring positivity.

“You don’t always need a reason to bring healing to the community,” she remarked. “From healing is where positive change and a new mindset starts.”

Saturday’s march was also co-organized by the Red Deer Welcoming and Inclusive Communities Network, and the Central Alberta Immigrant Women’s Association.

The Women’s March movement was inspired by the original Women’s March on Washington which took place Jan 21-22, 2017 in the US capital. Other walks have taken place across Canada to coincide with that anniversary, and with International Women’s Day.
