Community gets cold in support of Special Olympics

The second annual Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics Alberta took place Saturday at Red Deer’s Bower-Kin Community Centre.

The event is run by the same folks behind the Alberta Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Kevin Duval, an officer with Alberta Animal Services in Red Deer, spoke about why they support this particular cause.

“They’re our heroes to a large extent with all the challenges they overcome each year in terms of in their sport and in their personal lives,” Duval said. “Anything we can do as law enforcement to help them out — and we love to do what we do — they can count on us.”

“Our Special Olympics athletes face challenges every day and they break down the barriers of isolation and lowered expectations,” said Johnny Byrne, Special Olympics Alberta CEO and President.

“Breaking through the ice and showing you’re willing to challenge yourself is a small act of solidarity for our Special Olympic athletes.”

There were more than 40 participants at this year’s event, which is 4x as many as last year, according to Duval. In all, more than $17,000 was raised.
