Local dog on the mend after mysterious injury

A Red Deer woman is warning local dog owners to keep a close eye on their pets after her one-year-old American Bulldog was injured early Monday morning.

Lolly Myles says “Maggie” was in their backyard at 7:20 a.m. on March 4 after being let out by her sister-in-law who stood at the backdoor with the blinds open to watch over her.

Soon afterwards, Myles says her sister-in-law heard a yelp from Maggie and saw her jump a couple of feet off the ground.

“She opened the door quickly because she was right there and she heard a “schweet,” like an air-soft gun or something,” describes Myles. “Otherwise I wouldn’t know what to say happened to her except when she heard that noise, it sounded like it was some kind of shot launched with air.”

Myles says the injury caught the corner of Maggie’s eye just above her nose.

“It’s not just a cut, all the skin has been scraped right off of her face in that area,” exclaims Myles. “There was nobody in the alley, no vehicles, nothing. It was just like it came out of air, we have no idea.”

Myles says Maggie does bark occasionally but wasn’t barking at the time of the incident.

“Any scenario I think of, I can’t make it make sense,” says Myles. “Nothing makes total sense that I can say I know what happened because I really don’t know how to explain it. It was just a quarter of an inch from taking her eye out.”

Fortunately, Myles says Maggie is recovering nicely from her wound on Monday.

“We took her to the vet and got some antibiotic cream so it wouldn’t get infected,” explains Myles. “It has a steroid in it so that it won’t itch and swell and it’s starting to heal.”

Myles adds they called RCMP to investigate.

“They came out and looked at the dog, took pictures, walked in the yard,” recalls Myles. “They’re as baffled as we are as to what actually happened. They said they would increase patrols around our area for a while just to be a presence in case something is going on.”

Myles admits the incident has left her feeling “creeped out.”

“It’s creepy that something would happen that early in the morning in our own backyard,” exclaims Myles. “We have a six-foot wooden fence, so it’s not like she can get out or she’s ever been in anyone else’s yard or property. She stays contained in our own yard.”

Myles says her main message is to simply watch your dogs.

“Be vigilant and know that things happen,” warns Myles. “Whenever she’s out, we’re standing by the door with the door open so we can hear and see. So if we hear any sounds or noises, we’re ready to go out in the yard and check it out.”

RCMP confirm attending a call regarding a dog with minor injuries incident on Monday morning, but say there are currently no suspects or witnesses.
