“We get a lot of requests from municipalities for this type of funding because they’re trying to make sure that they can deliver the services to their people that they need. Water and wastewater are critical. They’re not particularly sexy, but try doing without them for a couple of days and see just how fundamental they are.”

The funding will go to expand the city’s existing wastewater treatment plant to accommodate the flows from North Red Deer’s Regional Wastewater System and the Sylvan Lake Regional Wastewater System.

The existing plant can accommodate up to 62 megalitres of water per day, but with the expansion it will be able to accommodate up to 100 megalitres per day by 2045.

Red Deer County Mayor Jim Wood is thrilled by the announcement and is thankful for the provincial government’s work.

“The partnership we see here today that has been fostered by the provincial government shows that communities are in fact able to work together to achieve a common goal for water and waste water.

“This treatment plant here in the city will look after the waste water from three various commissions from north, south and it couldn’t’ have been done without the provincial governments help. So their money today is extremely important. “

The project will add 15 years of additional capacity to the facility.

Project planning will start sometime next year and the upgrades should be complete by 2026.
