Feb 27, 2019 | 8:33 AM

Sylvan Lake town council has approved eight applications for the 2019 Community Spirit Capital Grants program.

Local organizations approved for a grant this year include Lakeway Landing Park Neighbours, which requested $22,000 for its dock project and received $11,000.

Town officials say the money will be used to replace the dock that was previously on the storm pond at Lakeway Landing Park. The old one had become unsafe and was removed. Officials say it’s the intent of the project to replace the dock and keep it as a central focal point in the area.

Sylvan Lake Minor Baseball received $9,124 of its $14,794 request for batting cage improvements and team uniforms. The money will help cover the cost of the batting cage improvements.

Sylvan Lake Municipal Library received $8,000 for its food bank garden project which aims to purchase materials and build several raised garden beds at the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library and the Sylvan Lake Food Bank.

The Sylvan Lake Lacrosse Association requested and received $6,000 to help provide its teams with proper goalie equipment.

The Yetti Lacrosse Association, however, did not have their $11,109 grant application approved for gloves and helmets to players, as well as purchase a smaller set of goalie gear and sticks for goalies.

Elsewhere, Sylvan’s Performing Arts and Rhythmic Centre (SPARC) Parent Association received half of its $10,000 request for its cargo trailer and studio equipment project.

The Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce received its full $4,000 request to run the glowing skate area and winter village during Light-Up the Lake. Town officials say the community event helps increase tourism and attract new business while stimulating people to come out in the colder months. The money is anticipated to help fund the lights which will go under the skating rinks on the lake.

The Central Alberta Disc Golf Association had its grant application of $3,612 approved for the Sylvan Lake Disc Golf Park which will see a permanent 18-hole disc golf course in the park area south and east of Cole Way installed.

Finally, Sylvan Lake Rec Hockey will receive $2,100 to replace two sets of jerseys that were purchased when the program started 10 years ago. Officials say there are approximately 40 jerseys to replace, with the organization also looking to purchase two sets of goalie equipment as well.
