City rolling out snow plows starting this weekend

Feb 24, 2019 | 9:31 AM

The City of Red Deer says its snow plows are ready to roll after recent precipitation left several centimetres of snow on local streets.

Plowing will begin around schools while students remain off, public schools being done this weekend, and Catholic schools on Monday. Any remaining streets around schools will be completed March 2-3.

Snow Zone plowing will begin Feb. 27 on Green Routes in Snow Zone G, with Grey Route plowing in Snow Zone G to follow on March 4.

Plowing will then continue alphabetically until all zones are completed.

Parking restrictions will be in place during the plowing of each zone, which could last a few days at a time.

“It should only take our crews a day or two to plow Green or Grey Routes in each Snow Zone, but it takes a lot longer if people leave their vehicles parked on the streets,” said Public Works Manager Greg Sikora, “That’s why it is so important for people to know the schedule and move their cars.”

There are several ways for residents to find out when their zone will be plowed, including by signing up for Snow Zone alerts, which can be received by text, email, or phone call.

One can also check the schedule at RedDeer.ca/snowzone, by following The City on social media, calling the Snow Zone Hotline at 403-406-8796, or watching for signs at neighbourhood entrances.

“It isn’t feasible for us to put signs on every street, but that doesn’t mean residents shouldn’t know the schedule,” said Sikora, “Snow Zone Alerts are fantastic – it takes just a few minutes to sign up and you get a text, email or phone call – which ever you prefer – to remind you to move your car.”

Plowing schedules are subject to change.
