Quebec wins hockey gold in OT thriller, Alberta crushes Saskatchewan for bronze

It was an electric atmosphere at the Westerner Park Centrium Friday night as Team Ontario and Team Quebec faced off in the gold medal game for male hockey at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

After building an early lead before falling behind, Team Quebec came back to defeat Ontario 4-3 in overtime to claim gold.

Quebec opened the scoring with a goal from Guillame Richard with 7:46 left in the first period. They added another one in the first when Maxime Pellerin tipped in a shot from the point past Ontario goalie Ben Gaudreau.

Ontario battled back, scoring three goal in the second period to take the lead. The go-ahead goal came off the stick of forward Brennan Othmann on a rebound.

Quebec tied the game 3-3 in the third and William Blackburn made a series of huge saves off beautiful Ontario scoring chances.

A 4-on-4 overtime saw both teams battle back and forth. Blackburn made a series of incredible saves, including an unbelievable cross-crease denial, to keep his team in it.

That bought time for Zachary L’Heureux to be the hero for Quebec as he found the puck through a desperate scramble in front of Ontario’s net and buried the game winner.

Quebec had 36 shots on goal and was 0-for-3 on the power play. Ontario racked up 41 shots and was 2-for-2 with the man advantage.

Earlier in the day in the bronze medal game, host Alberta crushed Saskatchewan 12-0 to earn some revenge for a tournament opening loss and a spot on the medal podium.

Alberta led 1-0 after the first period before exploding for eight goals in the second and three more in the third. Matt Savoie led the attack with three goals and two assists. Dylan Guenther had two goals and three assists.

Drew Sim of Tees made 36 saves to earn the shutout.
