Charges pending after fire at downtown hotel

Feb 21, 2019 | 9:34 AM

Emergency crews responded Thursday morning to the Super 8 motel on 43 Street where a fire alarm had been pulled.

The call came in at about quarter past seven, says Red Deer RCMP Staff Sargeant Angela Gilchrist.

“When members arrived, a male guest of the motel was taken into custody, and charges are currently pending. He was an unruly guest at the hotel,” Gilchrist notes. “From what we understand, a fire alarm was pulled, a fire extinguisher may have gone off, and the sprinkler system was also set off possibly due to a fire that was set in one of the utility closets on the second floor.”

Gilchrist couldn’t comment on where the man is from.

“We’ve been evacuating all the smoke from all floors and suites,” adds Gary Engebretson, Platoon Chief with Red Deer Emergency Services. “Any lessons to be learned here? Yeah, dont start fires in the storage room.”

The accused’s name and charges will be released once charges have been sworn before the courts.
