RDC Athletics recap: Feb. 15 – 16

RED DEER- It was a very successful weekend for RDC teams.

Both Red Deer College Basketball teams defeated the Ambrose University Lions in Calgary.

The Hockey Queens earned three of a possible four points against the SAIT Trojans and the Kings Hockey team dominated the Portage College Voyageurs in Lac La Biche, outscoring the Voyageurs by a combined total of 17-2 over two games.

Here is a summary of what happened.

Queens Basketball, Saturday, Feb. 16, Ambrose University

The RDC Queens trailed the Lions by five points in the fourth quarter, but managed to come out on top with a 79-76 road victory.

Sandra Garcia-Bernal was selected as the Queens Player-of-the-Game, accumulating 18 points, one block, one assist and one rebound.

The Red Deer College Queens will play a pair of road games this weekend against the Briercrest College Clippers.

Kings Basketball, Saturday, Feb. 16, Ambrose University

In one of the most amazing comebacks in RDC Kings Basketball history, the fourth place Red Deer College Kings (11-8) trailed the Ambrose University Lions (12-8) by 27 points in the third quarter, but rallied and earned a 91-88 victory.

Khurram Sultan was named the Kings Player-of-the-Game.

The fifth-year guard from Edmonton totaled 24 points, three rebounds and one steal.

The Lions sit in third spot with 24 points and have played one more game than the Kings, who have 22 points. Fifth place Lethbridge College (10-9) has 20 points.

The Red Deer College Kings will play their final two regular season games against the Briercrest College Clippers this weekend in Saskatchewan.

Queens Hockey, Friday, Feb. 15, SAIT

The third place RDC Queens defeated the SAIT Trojans by a score of 4-3 in Calgary.

Neisha Germann had a hat trick, earning the Queens Player-of-the-Game. Sydnee Decorby added a single. Karlee Fetch made 28 saves (0.903), recording the win in net.

Queens Hockey, Saturday, Feb. 16, SAIT

In an afternoon rematch, the Trojans edged the Queens 2-1 in double overtime.

Jenessa Fournier scored RDC’s lone goal.

The third place Queens (10-9-5-0) have wrapped up the regular season but several teams have games remaining.

The last ACAC regular season games will be played on Saturday, February 23, and then the official playoff schedule will be released.

The top four teams will make the postseason.

The fourth place Olds College Broncos and fifth place SAIT Trojans cannot pass the Queens in the standings.

Kings Hockey, Friday, Feb. 15, Portage College

The Red Deer College Kings soundly defeated the Portage College Voyageurs 8-1 in Lac La Biche.

Chance Longjohn, Dylan Thudium, Donovan Lumb and Tyrell Mappin scored for RDC.

Both Parker Smyth and Scott Ferguson had a pair of goals.

Arik Weersink stopped 16 out of 17 shots (0.941), picking up the win in net.

Kings Hockey, Saturday, Feb. 16, Portage College

The Kings controlled the Voyageurs 9-1.

Kyle Salaway, Ryley Smith and Lynnden Pastachak scored two goals each.

Jacob Wozney, Tyrell Mappin and Dylan Thudium contributed one each.

Troy Trombley made 17 saves (0.944).

The RDC Kings (15-7-1-1) share third spot with the SAIT Trojans (16-7-0-0).

Both teams have 32 points, but the Trojans have played one less game.

NAIT (20-6-0-0) leads the league with 40 points and MacEwan University (17-5-1-0) is next with 35.

The fifth place University of Alberta Augustana Vikings have 29 points.

The top six teams will qualify for the postseason.

The final spot is currently occupied by the Concordia University Thunder (6-18-1-1).

The RDC Kings have three regular season games remaining.

Next, they will host the MacEwan University Griffins on Friday, February 22 at the NexSource Centre in Sylvan Lake.

Puck drop is at 1:30 p.m.
