“For me personally it means an awful lot,” says Littlechild about bearing the torch at Fort Normandeau. “At this particular site, in fact, there used to be an Indian residential school here. So I wanted my run to be dedicated to the children that came here. After all, the Canada Games are about children – children and youth.”

This is the first time in Canada Games history that the torch has traveled across the country. It visited 48 communities during its five-month journey.

“The excitement can be felt around the city,” says Mayor Tara Veer. “Just incredible community spirit, volunteerism. Sponsors, donors, businesses have come on side. There’s energy and excitement in our city and I feel confident that our community will pull off the best Canada Games for their 27th edition.”

The opening ceremony of the Canada Winter Games Friday night will kickstart the largest event Red Deer has ever hosted. Around 20,000 people are expected to visit our city over the next two weeks.

“It’s a very special event for our country when we can gather individuals from all over to come and celebrate life in a place like Red Deer for the Canada Games,” says Littlechild. “It’s really about uplifting and celebrating life and that’s what’s really important about the games. We’re so happy and proud to be a part of it.”
