Third trial dates set for driver charged in crash that killed two teens

A trial that has been delayed twice for a Red Deer man charged in a crash that killed two teens is now scheduled to take place later this month.

Dylan Beauclair, 21, faces two counts of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

A three-day trial was to get underway in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench on January 16. However, the case was adjourned after defence lawyer Donna Derie-Gillespie told court she received notice of new evidence from the Crown only hours before the trial was set to begin.

Derie-Gillespie argued this affected her ability to properly argue the case and was a breach of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

This marked the second time the trial has been delayed. In October, the trial had to be rescheduled because the Crown prosecutor for the case was ill.

Trial is now scheduled to take place over two days from February 21-22 in Red Deer.

Beauclair is charged in relation to a single-vehicle crash on July 1, 2016 east of Red Deer near the intersection of Highway 595 and Range Road 261.

Two occupants were ejected from the vehicle and died on scene, 16-year-old Ashleigh Smith of Springbrook and 18-year-old John Dolliver of Penhold. Two others were seriously injured and taken to hospital in Red Deer while a third occupant was treated at the scene and released.
