First phase of modernization complete at St. Patrick’s Community School

Students at St. Patrick’s Community School went to class on Monday and were blown away with the changes they saw.

The school has completed the first of a three-phase $13.5 million renovation and expansion project.

“Six middle school classrooms were demolished and two elementary (classrooms),” explains Terri Lynn Mundorf, Principal at St. Patrick’s Community School.

“The space that we’re standing in used to be just open concrete. So it’s all enclosed, totally re-built, re-designed, Group 2 Architecture did an absolutely amazing job utilizing this space.

“We have more windows, the garage doors in the classrooms that open up to allow for collaborative teaching, and presentations.”

Kelly Groenwegen, a grade 9 teacher who has taught at St. Patrick’s the longest says the upgrades are a nice refresher.

“It’s pretty exciting, I mean to get a nice fresh school, nice big spaces that are useable and we can collaborate back and forth with the doors open, the kids are really enjoying it. It’s just nice to be here and get a new space.”

Groenwegen says the new layout has a lot of potential.

“It’s pretty new yet, but we’re still getting organized with how we’re going to set it up and working with our teams across the windows over here. But I think it’ll be really good once we get the collaboration worked out, it’s only been two days in.”

The school has lost access to things like the gymnasium and one washroom, but has gained several new work and learning areas.

Mundorf says they are excited for work on the rest of the project to continue.

“Phase two technically started yesterday, Monday, February 4, and will run until the end of June. At the end of June there will be another move and we will get that space back. And phase three will start during the summer sometime and by December 2019 we’re supposed to have our school back. So that is very exciting.”

Currently about 80-90 students and staff are relocated to St. Teresa of Avila School while construction at St. Pat’s continues.
