Hitmen honouring Calgary hockey history with Corral Series

CALGARY – The Calgary Hitmen are going back to their roots and honoring the start of hockey in Calgary by playing three games in the birthplace of hockey in Calgary, the old Stampede Corral.

The Hitmen are also branding each game to a different former team that called Calgary home in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Calgary Centennials (WHL):

The Calgary Centennials were the first WHL team to call Calgary home. They lasted 9 seasons in the WHL from the 1967-68 season until the 1976-77 season.

The Hitmen dropped game one of the series to the Brandon Wheat Kings 6-5 in overtime on Centennials night back on Feb. 1st.

Calgary Cowboys (WHA):

The Calgary Cowboys were the first professional hockey team to Calgary home back in the mid-1970s as part of the World Hockey Association. The Cowboys only lasted two years and played out of the Stampede Corral. The Hitmen will wear their Cowboys jerseys in game two of the series when they host the Regina Pats on Feb. 6th.

Calgary Wranglers (WHL):

The final game of the series will see the Calgary Hitmen take to the ice honoring the Calgary Wranglers. The Centennials actually became the Wranglers back in the 1977-78 season and lasted 9 years as the Wranglers played until the 1986-87 season before they relocated to Lethbridge and became the Hurricanes. The Hitmen will ‘become’ the Wrangles on Feb. 8th, when they host the CHL’s best Prince Albert Raiders.
