Foster leaves as Red Deer’s top cop

Red Deer RCMP Superintendent Ken Foster has left the detachment for another assignment.

Chief Superintendent Shahin Mehdizadeh, District Commander of the Central Alberta RCMP, has announced Inspector Gerald Grobmeier as Interim Officer in Charge of the detachment with a permanent replacement to be named in the future.

Mehdizadeh says Foster has taken a temporary assignment outside of the detachment.

“I would like to thank Superintendent Foster for his dedicated service during his time in Red Deer,” said C/Supt. Mehdizadeh. “He has made a lasting impact on the community and the detachment, having achieved significant outcomes with regards to crime reduction and prevention. I wish him luck in his future endeavours and know that he will be missed.”

Some at City Hall also sang the praises of Foster’s commitment to the community.

“Crime and public safety continue to be the number one priority of Red Deerians, and I think one particular area of strength Superintendent Foster brought was building bridges with the community, both with front-line organizations that are serving Red Deerians in crime prevention, intervention and enforcement, but also by building relationships with individuals and the business community,” said Mayor Tara Veer.

“In terms of being an officer in charge, he has been responsive to the objectives that council has outlined in the Annual Policing Plan, and certainly the hallmarks of his presence here are with respect to rebuilding community policing as identified in victim services and the new downtown unit.”

Paul Goranson, Director of Protective Services with The City of Red Deer, says Foster oversaw dramatic decreases in crime levels.

“We just reviewed the crime stats today from 2018 and the levels and changes that have happened in the last three years have been significant. A lot of that is due to the leadership and mentorship Superintendent Foster has provided at the detachment,” he said.

“When he first came here, he really tried to integrate into the community. He went out and developed many different relationships with the business folks and different interest groups. That’s really helped develop the profile of policing in Red Deer.”

Superintendent Foster has over 25 years of service with RCMP, and joined the Red Deer RCMP as Officer in Charge of Red Deer in August 2016.

Grobmeier has been with Red Deer RCMP for over three years.
