Restaurant ordered closed following spot check

RED DEER- Another Red Deer restaurant has been ordered closed due to health code violations.

The City of Red Deer’s Public Safety Compliance Team (PSCT) conducted safety checks at local restaurants and bars Friday evening (Oct. 19).

The PCST was formed in 2013 as a partnership between Red Deer Emergency Services, Red Deer RCMP, Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission, Alberta Health Services, and The City’s Inspections & Licensing Department.

Individual inspections between each partner included checks on, health codes and food storage, building fire codes, fire exits and occupant loads, safety and security of patrons and staff, and liquor sales relating to legal age and consumption levels.

According to the Alberta Health Services website, a closure order was issued for Coyotes Bar & Grill (7474 50 Avenue) following an inspection conducted on October 19. Among the violations noted in the report:

– Equipment and food contact surfaces are not being cleaned and sanitized properly

– Food handlers are not washing hands frequently and/or in a proper manner

– Foods under refrigeration are not being maintained at or below 4 C (per regulations)

– The mechanical dishwashing equipment is not adequately cleaning and sanitizing utensils

– Hand sinks are not operating properly

– Several liquor bottles were stored directly in the ice intended for drinks.

AHS regulations stipulate that a facility must remain closed until all noted repairs are completed.

Meantime, there were no federal or provincial charges assessed following Friday’s spot checks.

“The PSCT works together to ensure hospitality and entertainment establishments provide a safe environment for both patrons and staff,” said Wes Van Bavel, Fire Marshal for Red Deer Emergency Services.

The team is both preventive and enforcement based, and uses a coordinated approach to ensure that the hospitality industry is following and maintaining standards as outlined in Federal and Provincial Statues, as well as Municipal bylaws.

Unannounced safety inspections will continue to be conducted in the future, including inspections at local cannabis retail stores.

Last month, eating establishments in Red Deer, Sylvan Lake and Ponoka County were ordered closed in light of various violations. One of them, Phoenix Buffet in Red Deer, has since reopened while the other two remain closed.
