Red Deer, RDC embracing energy efficiency

Central Alberta is proving to be a leader in energy efficiency programs and practices.

Energy Efficiency Alberta CEO Monica Curtis was in Red Deer Tuesday, and talked about how Red Deer is leading the way when it comes to Energy conservation in Alberta.

Right now, 1 in 10 homes is participating in the ‘Residential No Charge Energy Savings’ program, and are upgrading to greener hardware in their homes.

Red Deer is also one of the top communities for taking part in home improvement and online incentives, with 285 participants adding insulation, replacing windows, opting for drain water heat recovery or installing a tank-free hot water heater.

Red Deer College is also doing its part as they took advantage of Energy Efficiency Alberta’s Residential and Commercial Solar Program. The college has installed 2,500 solar modules on a campus rooftop. Over the course of a year, those will produce enough power for 135 homes annually.

“Alberta’s new energy economy is benefiting today’s students, creating new jobs, driving economic growth, and helping make businesses more competitive and productive,” said Curtis.

“Alberta’s economy is growing – by $475 million – through investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy, helping create more than 2,300 jobs.”

There are also almost 200 Red Deer businesses that have taken advantage of the $1.4 million in energy saving incentives to make their businesses more efficient.
