Johnson ready for Rebels season to begin

Reese Johnson says he’s ready.

The 20-year-old forward says he’s excited to lead the way as captain for a fairly young Red Deer Rebels team as they navigate through the 2018-19 WHL Regular Season.

“It’s awesome. It’s something I take pride in,” Johnson said about taking on the captain’s role. “I just like to do what I do and lead the way I’ve been taught over the years. I’ve had the good opportunity in the past, I’ve had some good captains lead me and I’m trying to do the same.”

Johnson can look no further than his own family for leadership inspiration. His older brother Wyatt wore the ‘C’ for the Rebels for part of the 2015-16 season.

“He was definitely my biggest role model growing up with how he led things. I think he was an awesome leader and think a lot of other guys did, too. I just learned a lot from him and try to do the same things he was.”

Johnson got a taste of NHL life last week by attending rookie camp with the New Your Rangers. He scored two goals just over six minutes apart during a game vs. St. Louis at the Traverse City NHL Prospects Tournament.

In 120 regular season games with the Rebels, the Saskatoon native has 28 goals and 48 points – 23 of those goals came during an offensive breakout this past season.

The Rebels will need that kind of production out of their captain this season if they hope to compete for a playoff spot.

It’s all hands on deck for the Rebels with the return of Alexander Alexeyev from NHL training camps.

Alexeyev, Washington’s first round selection at this year’s NHL Draft, picked up an assist for the Capitals Tuesday night 5-2 preseason loss to Boston. Alexeyev played 16 minutes in the game.

Dawson Barteaux is also back with the Rebels after attending camp with the Dallas Stars, who selected him in round five of this year’s NHL Draft.

The Rebels kick off their2018-19 WHL Regular Season Friday in Edmonton then play their home opener Saturday night versus the Oil Kings at the Enmax Centrium. Both games start at 7 p.m. and can be heard on 106.7 The Drive.
