New intersection for 77 Street, partial closure for 46 Street

Sep 1, 2018 | 4:37 PM

Summer holidays may be winding down but road construction season in Red Deer continues to roll on.

City officials say work on a new right in/right out intersection will begin on 77 Street next week, with the purpose being to allow access to the new northside community centre and improve traffic flow for staff and students at the nearby Glendale Sciences and Technology School.

The northside community centre is slated to open in mid-2019.

The project however means traffic restrictions will be in place, with eastbound traffic on 77 Street to be reduced to one lane during construction which is scheduled to wrap-up by the end of this month.

Transit customers will also be impacted by the permanent closure of bus stop #792 (Route 8) which will be removed as part of the project. Route 8 can be accessed in this area at bus stop #841 located at 77 Street and Keast Way.

Elsewhere, a portion of 46 Street in downtown Red Deer will close on Wednesday.

It will close between 49 Avenue and Little Gaetz (50) Avenue for roughly 10 weeks while a water main replacement is completed.

This will result in no through-traffic for the duration of the closure, with motorists to be detoured to 45 Street and 47 Street. Access to businesses however will be maintained through sidewalks and back alleys.

Drivers are reminded to slow down through these construction zones and obey all signs, while pedestrians are asked to cross only at designated crosswalks.
