Local farmers market ‘keeping an open mind’ on cannabis products

Aug 31, 2018 | 6:00 AM

The Drayton Valley Evergreen Farmers Market is keeping an eye on the upcoming legalization of cannabis.

Ottawa is aiming to make edible cannabis legal a year after legalizing marijuana for smoking. This would make products allegedly available for fall 2019.

That opens up a whole new market for cannabis infused products to set up selling items like chocolate, pastries or butter.

There are already craft beer vendors at the market, so Market Manager Colleen Schoeninger  believes cannabis items will be fair game.

“Our market is going to be keeping an open mind, because right now we do have craft beer and mead,” said Market Manage Colleen Schoeninger.

Anything cannabis has to go first go through the AGLC and become approved. Once that is done,  Scheoninger says the market will see what they bring to the table.

“As long as they have gone through the application and regulation process and they’ve got their paperwork, then we can accept them.”

Schoeninger said she does suspect that there will be some people going forward in the area and asking to sell cannabis products, and that they will have to look at the applications at case by case basis.

Between 40-50 vendors set up shop at the Mackenzie conference centre each week, with about 500 people turning out.
