Chamber recruiting volunteer committee members

Aug 20, 2018 | 7:20 AM

The Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce is recruiting volunteers to fill new committees created in a bid to bolster their reach, expertise, and relevance in an evolving business climate.

In a release, the Chamber says its policy committees are groups of volunteers from across the business community who meet to identify issues facing business and develop solutions to bring forward to the relevant level of government.

“Thanks to a ‘strength in numbers’ approach, when Chambers talk, governments listen,” the Chamber release adds.

The Red Deer & District Chamber of Commerce represents about 850 area businesses. For provincial issues, the Alberta Chambers of Commerce represents over 24,000 Alberta businesses. Federally, the Canadian Chamber represents over 200,000. This makes Chamber Policy Committees one of the most effective ways to push for meaningful change.

Typically, committees will meet once per month for an hour and a half to discuss issues which include:

– Municipal Affairs (Planning & Development, City & County Budgets/Taxes, Municipal Elections, Downtown Revitalization)

– Finance & Taxation (Trade, Economic Development, Specifics of tax statutes)

– Human Capital & Technology (Education, Workforce Development, Technology)

– Natural Resources (Agriculture, Energy, Environment)

Those interested in joining a committee can contact Reg Warkentin, Policy and Advocacy Manager (rwarkentin@reddeerchamber.com, 403 347 4491).
