A Red Deer Public Schools teacher has been nominated for a national award.

Krysten Klein, a teacher at Mountview Elementary, has been nominated for the Post Foods Search for Goodness Award.

The award recognizes outstanding teachers across the country, and Krysten is currently sitting in the top five.

The prize is valued at $10,000 with the winner receiving $5,000 for their classroom and their school receiving another $5,000.

Voting is open until August 27.

“It would be phenomenal for the school to receive that money and for our classroom because we could help this year’s students with different needs. Having that money would be a fantastic opportunity,” said Klein, adding she knew she had a passion for being a teacher early on. “I love the kids. When they come in in September and leave in June – I love seeing them grow and learn. Teaching is such a passion for me.”

Klein was nominated by a parent, Linda Lane.

Lane, is a parent who struggles greatly to provide the basic needs for her family, but she’s determined to make sure her children have what they need to be successful and she works two jobs to do so.

“Ms. Klein goes above and beyond for all her students, and not just students in her own classroom, but in other classes, for other teachers and families,” said Lane, adding that Klein worked with her daughter in getting glasses. “My daughter didn’t like to read and with having great communication with Ms. Klein we discovered that my daughter needed glasses. Now she loves to read and she picks up books on her own.”
