West-central Alberta experiencing average wildfire season

Jul 25, 2018 | 1:54 PM

Though other provinces like British Columbia and Ontario are struggling with wildfires in the midst of extreme temperatures, Alberta has been spared so far this season.

Since the start of the fire season on March 1 there have been 960 blazes across Alberta.

“We’re a bit under the five year average, which is 1,064 wildfires at this time,” said Derek Gagnon, a fire information officer with Alberta Wildfire.

The Drayton Valley, Edson and Rocky Mountain House areas have seen the average amount of fires so far, however Gagnon added that the Rocky Forest Area is below average in the amount of hectares charred.

The Rocky Forest Area has had 43 fires pop up resulting in just 8.42 hectares scorched.

The Edson Forest Area has had 92 fires so far this year, with 1,300 hectares charred. A bulk of the area burned is due to a fire sparked by lightning near Hinton in June that has razed 1,274 hectares.

The majority of fires started at the beginning of the fire season, particularly during the month of May, with conditions being drier due to plant life not greening up. However over the past few weeks things have started to slow down.

As of Wednesday afternoon there were 12 wildfires burning across the province, with no new starts in the past 48 hours.

Gagnon added that even though the wildfire conditions have been not as high in terms of fire danger lately, Albertans are reminded to make sure campfires are fully extinguished and cool to the touch before they are left.

“Everyone wants to enjoy the forest area, we want Albertans to enjoy the forest area, we just want them to be safe and cautious when using their campfires.”

Currently the fire danger is low for the Edson Forest Area, and moderate for the Rocky Forest Area.
